Louis Esterhuizen. Die gedig as ‘n stuk meganika

Via ‘n skakel op die Poetry Foundation se webblad beland ek by ene Nick Sturm se bloginskrywing oor die gedig as meganiese konstruksie. Soos hy tereg in sy openingsparagraaf noem, is dié beskouing niks nuuts nie. Trouens, William Carlos Williams het reeds in 1944 gesê “A poem is a small (or large) machine made of words […] It isn’t what he [the poet] says that counts as a work of art, it’s what he makes, with such intensity of perception that it lives with an intrinsic movement of its own to verify its authenticity […]There is no poetry of distinction without formal invention, for it is in the intimate form that works of art achieve their exact meaning, in which they most resemble the machine…” (Uit die inleiding tot The Wedge.)

Volgens Strum is dié siening wesenlik deel van die moderne beskouing en kan dit gesien word as reaksie op die New Criticism se obsessie met wat as ‘die stabiliteit van die teks’ gereken kan word.

Aardskuddende insig? Waarskynlik nie. Met hierdie eerste aflewering in ‘n reeks oor dié onderwerp het Strum waarskynlik maar net die terrein probeer afbaken … So gaan loer gerus van tyd tot tyd in by die webtuiste genaamd We who are about to die ten einde te kyk waarheen dié beskouing ons gaan neem.

Mmmm …
