Louis Esterhuizen.

Volgens sy regsverteenwoordiger, Zhao Jianwei, gaan hulle egter teen dié vonnis appelleer: “: “We believe the verdict was not based on the facts and the prosecutors and the court violated procedural laws and regulations,” het Jianwei aan The Guardian gesê.

Volgens sy vrou, Zhan Xia, is dit egter net ‘n dekmantel: “”After the apartments were sold, the company sued him for contract fraud, which is groundless,” het sy gesê. “He is a very good friend of Liao Yiwu, but he didn’t tell me whether he helped Liao flee. His being on trial must be related to his alleged help of Liao because the economic charge against him can’t be proven.”

Intussen het Liao Yiwu, wat tans in Duitsland woonagtig is, hom luidens ‘n wydgepubliseerde verklaring van dié aanklagte jeens Bifeng gedistansieer: “I recently learned from several channels that the police arrested Li Bifeng because of me. The police suspect [he] financed my escape – this is a groundless lie.”

The Writers in Prison Committee (WiPC) of PEN International is seriously concerned about the prolonged detention without charge of Chinese activist, novelist and poet Li Bifeng. He has been held since September 2011 for alleged economic crimes, although he is believed to be targeted for his peaceful opposition activism. The WiPC calls upon the Chinese authorities to provide further information about Li’s detention. It fears that he may be held in violation of Article of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which China is a signatory, and Article 35 of the Chinese constitution, and if so calls for his immediate and unconditional release. It also seeks assurances about his health and treatment in detention.”

In This Country, We Can Only Hibernate

Winter arrives too early.
Our trees begin to wither.
We no longer have the nutrients to offer them;
Our dark hair slowly freezes to white
In the snows of passing time.
Our skin is like chapped fields.
Winter is here,
We all love to hibernate.
Our hearts are tired
Our blood is tired,
We nestle beneath the snow to hibernate.
