“He founded the review Souffles in 1966, which played a major role in sparking a literary and artistic renaissance throughout the Maghreb. What was initially a ‘meeting point of poets’ soon included the creative energies of painters, film and theatre makers and thinkers. Along with Moroccan dissident Abraham Sefaty, he also founded the Association de Recherche Culturelle (ARC). The organisation was soon targeted by the government and the founders arrested.”

“Little Things” (2013: Leafe Press)

“The Bottom of the Jar” (2013: Archipelago Press)

“The World’s Embrace – Selected Poems” (2003: City Lights Books, San Fransisco)

Vir jou leesplesier volg twee korterige gedigte.

The Earth Opens and Welcomes You

The earth opens

and welcomes you

One day, your beloved will rediscover

your legendary smile

and mourning will come to an end

Your children will grow

and read your poems unashamed

Your country will heal, as if by magic

when men consumed by the illusion

will drink from the fountain of your kindness

(Uit: ‘The Earth Opens and Welcomes You’)

I’m a Child of This Century

I’m a child of this dreary century
a child who never grew up
Doubts that set my tongue on fire
burned my wings
I learned to walk
then I unlearned it
I grew weary of oases
and camels eager for ruins
My head turned to the East
I lie in the middle of the road
and wait for the caravan of the mad
