FRAGMENTE UIT DOGEN. Vertaling via Engels in Afrikaans. Vert. deur Helize Janse van Vuuren

Gegee aan Hironaga Hatano

Die hele wêreld

splinter in ontelbare stukkies.

*

As jy my noem nie-wetend en nie-begrypend,

dan is dit reg.

As jy my nie noem nie-wetend en nie-begrypend,

dan is dit nie reg nie.

Hoe noem jy my? Sê dit nou.

Noem my sommer net ‘n kind van Tiantong.

Given to Hironaga Hatano

The whole universe

shatters into a hundred pieces.

In the great death

there is no heaven, no earth.

Once body and mind have turned over,

there is only this to say:

past mind cannot be grasped,

present mind cannot be grasped,

future mind cannot be grasped.

On his portrait

It seems that some of Dogen’s advanced students had artists paint his portrait and then asked Dogen to add a poem to the paintings. These poems may be seen as Dogen’s self-image as well as encouragement for his students and dharma descendants.

*

Do not say heaven and earth are just one finger,

or myriad things just one horse.

How is it after all?

Wherever the eye reaches is a fist

crushing the empty sky, dripping blood.

Wherever the fist reaches is an eye

seeing through its surroundings –

its muscle is long

*

If you call me not knowing and not understanding,

that is correct.

If you do not call me not knowing and not understanding,

that is not correct.

How do you call me? Say it now.

Just call me a child of  Tiantong.
