grandpa crumples
like coca-cola can
minutes ago
his cheeks were still the colour of nectarines
he put out his last stuyvesant
just before breakfast
it was august in the year nineteen seventy
month of dust
beige days
wind
swaying the bleak caravan
behind the counter
his two youngest daughters
words have already seared their tongues
they spread the toast
with pus-yellow butter
grandpa slumps lower in his canvas chair
the one with brown and orange flowers
the caravan rocks ever so slightly
my grandma looks up
from her small gas stove
the bacon not done yet but so what
from now on
her caravan’s little stoep with no husband
she can’t complain about that

hy het sy laaste stuyvesant uitgeblaas
net voor
brekfis
dit was augustus in die jaar negentien sewentig

beige dae
winde
wat aan die kaal karavaan ruk
agter die toonbankie
sy jongste twee dogters
op hul tonge het woorde reeds verskroei
hulle smeer die toast
met ettergeel botter
oupa syg neer in sy seilstoel
die een met bruin en oranje blomme
die karavaantjie skommel net so effens
my ouma kyk op
vanaf haar gasstofie
die bacon nog nie gaar nie maar wat
van nou af
haar woonwa se stoepie sonder eggenoot
hieroor kan sy nie kla nie
